Wes didn’t know what he expected Cameron’s house to look like. He said he lived with Camilla, but Wes figured it would be something like his house, a cute bungalow-style only stuffed with more people.

Cameron’s house was not a cute, small bungalow.

For one, it was not small. The house was at least three stories tall and seemed to expand in each direction. The whole thing was painted a light yellow that was either welcoming or needed to be washed. That there were not enough windows for the amount of wall space was the second thing Wes noticed. Which led him to his next observation. He could see several entrances into the house from where he stood on the sidewalk. At least three, and he was sure there was at least one behind the house if he had to guess. The pathway up to what Wes assumed was the main door was cleared of snow and ice.

Careful steps took him up to the nearest door. The front door opened just as he raised his fist to knock. Standing there, in a well-worn yellow apron, was Cameron, a flour smudge on his left cheek and a wide grin on his face. “You made it!” He sounded delighted and surprised, like he wasn’t entirely sure Wes was going to show up.

“I made it. And I brought wine,” Wes said, holding up the bottles of wine he’d brought, one red and one white, since he didn’t know what Cameron was making. Wes prided himself on the fact that both wines cost more than ten dollars and, hopefully, wouldn’t give him a headache.

Cameron’s beautiful green eyes lit up with his smile. “Perfect. Come in. I’m just finishing up in the kitchen. Camilla is at Tim’s tonight, so we have the place to ourselves.” He stepped aside to let Wes in and then walked down a bright hallway toward the kitchen. The house smelled amazing, like bread and spices.

The kitchen was huge, a true chef’s kitchen, and clearly indicated the house had seen a remodel or two since it contained a large island in the middle, as well as a full range stove. The most surprising thing, which took the place of honor in the kitchen, was a large wood-fired oven. It was set into the wall, a hulking brick thing, and was clearly well-loved.

“You built your house around a whole-ass pizza oven?” Wes asked, his tone incredulous, and his eyes firmly fixed on the thing in question.

Cameron rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly, and Wes found his attention turning toward how Cameron’s large hands slipped through his shiny brown strands. “I wouldn’t say built. This house is like two hundred years old. But we did a few modifications to incorporate it into the kitchen. One of the handy things about magic is saving on contractor bills and rearranging the structure of the house.” Cameron let his hand fall to his side, his cheeks a little pink. “Besides, it’s my favorite part of the house. I bake everything in it.
